A letter to my dad
As Father's day arrives, I was writing a sermon about the great redemption that Christ gave the "woman" in Luke 7. My mind drifted, and I thought of you.
Even though, after substantial research, I could find no pagan roots to the holiday, I thought it would be prudent to send you a gift before Father's Day, so that you could accept it.
I just wanted to say,
Thanks for “raising the bar.” Though our family had issues, you far exceeded your father and your mother in parenting us. Thanks. People rarely do that. In fact, the sins of the fathers are usually visited upon the third and the fourth generation.
Thanks for stopping the alcoholism - in this generation. Thanks for stopping the abandonment - in this generation, thanks for stopping the ignorance - in this generation.
Thanks for your service to your country, your striving for an education, your stability in employment at the City, and for pointing us toward God.
No matter what mistakes you have made (we all do), it is true: you have given us a chance to do what you did - improve upon the last generation. May I do the same for my children.
Love,
Kevin
